Retirement often opens the door to new adventures, and for many, building a dream home symbolizes the start of this next chapter. The journey began with the completion of the permit process, excavation, and foundation laying. Although these initial stages took two months, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of a strong start. Just like in life, having a solid foundation is crucial for what comes next. Choosing Character with Salvaged Materials
One of the most thrilling elements of the building process has been selecting materials that tell a story. A recent trip with my builder son-in-law, Travis, to Michigan Barn Wood and Salvage revealed heaps of rescued beams and rustic barn siding, each piece rich with history. Choosing the imperfectly perfect barn wood to become my screen porch ceiling signified more than aesthetics; it represented a connection to the past and a touch of character in my new home.

With framing underway, the excitement of making design choices continues. I felt electrified as I revisited flooring options, and I am pleased to report that my style preferences remain intact, even after a summer’s worth of trends.
